Computer delivery service for postgraduate researchers

What computer equipment can I request via this service?

The University runs a service to provide postgraduate researchers with personal computing equipment.

If you require other items such as screens, keyboards, mice or other peripherals then you should discuss with your line manager or supervisor as to how to source these locally. You will not be able to request such equipment through this service.

If you're looking for something high-powered to use in your research, you may only need a standard laptop for yourself, as the interactive Computational Shared Facility (iCSF) may be more appropriate for computationally intensive work.

Who can request a computer?

The service works on the following principles:

  • Each postgraduate researcher will have access to one computer, and the University will fund that to a standard level.
  • If a specification higher than the standard computers is needed, this service can provide additional computers, but such a request will require local funding.

How do I progress with a computer request?

Please read this information carefully, as requests which are filled in incorrectly are likely to be delayed.

The process for standard laptops is simple:

  1. Review the standard laptop catalogue and choose a computer, then download the relevant validation form.
  2. Complete the validation form and send to your supervisor to complete and return to you.
  3. Then send to your Faculty PGR Office (identified on the form) to validate the request.
  4. Once completed and returned to you, create a request via the "Request IT funded/partially funded laptop" form on the IT Support Portal, and attach the validation form to that request.
  5. A University IT colleague will be in touch within 5 working days, to confirm your laptop is available, and to arrange for the laptop to be set up either on-campus or currently more likely over the phone.
  6. Once configured, the computer can be taken away for on-campus setup or delivered via a courier if set up over the phone.

The process for higher specification computers is:

  1. Review the higher specification catalogue and choose a computer, then download the relevant validation form.
Please use this form even if you are requesting a desktop computer, the form will be changed soon.
  5. A University IT colleague will be in touch within 5 working days, to confirm your computer has been ordered and provide indicative timescales.
  6. When the computer has been received into stock you will be contacted by an IT colleague to arrange for the computer to be set up
  7. Once set up, laptops can be taken away for on-campus setup or delivered via a courier if set up over the phone. Desktops will be installed on campus.

Requesting advice

The process for requesting advice, bulk purchasing, purchasing bespoke specifications or requesting standard desktop computers:

Please visit the IT Support Portal and search for the form "Purchasing IT equipment V2". There is a dropdown box on that form called "Request Type" where you can select "Request advice on IT purchases".
