UseNet News

What is UseNet News?

Very simply, it is the largest forum for public discussions on the Internet. For a more detailed description see Wikipedia.

How to access News

The University no longer hosts a News reading facility on campus. However, it has signed up to the JANET News Reading Service. To access this service via your newsreader client, you need to configure it to point to man.jnrs.ja.net.

Authentication is by the domain name of your machine. We have registered man.ac.uk, umist.ac.uk, mcc.ac.uk and manchester.ac.uk. Other domains could be added if required. Please contact Tony Arnold (tony.arnold@manchester.ac.uk) to do this.

Alternatively, if you want web based access to general discussion groups and UseNet type groups you can go to the following sites:

Google Groups

Newzbot

Yahoo Groups

Support for News

Under the agreement with JANET to access their News Reading Service, IT Services will provide first-line support. Please contact the IT Servicedesk if you have any questions.
