Physical Security

Unattended laptops and desktops are easy targets for thieves.

In the UK, laptop crime is on the rise - news reports have revealed how thieves have stolen laptops out of cars, at coffee bars, at libraries, and when left behind in taxis. Lock them down or carry them; never leave them in the open.

Your desktop or laptop should be secured and your office locked when unoccupied and when you leave at night.

A simple 'lock and chain' (and locked office) will deter the majority of opportunist thefts.

Physical security for a laptop/desktop is generally purchased with the new equipment. If you need to purchase just a padlock and chain or other device, they should be ordered using the same process as any other IT accessory. For advice on purchasing IT related accessories please refer to Buy IT webpages.

Laptops, LCD monitors (and also most PCs) can be secured with a security lock and plastic coated steel cable. These come in a number of forms with Kensington the most well known manufacturer.  Variations on this theme include security plates that are bonded to 2 or more items and secured via a cable and lock.

See the Kensington 'Security' section on the Insight web site for further information, including pricing.

It is also possible to purchase a set of locks which have the same key (suited locks), useful for securing a set of desktops in a computer lab or open plan office.
