Personal Web Pages
Personal Web Pages is a service for all staff and students at The University of Manchester who have centrally provided p: drives (this is the majority of users). The service allows users to create web pages and make these available over the Internet. Personal Web Pages are designed to let members of The University publish information about their academic activities quickly and informally, but please note that some Faculties and Schools have alternative systems for promoting research and that policy on use for Personal Web Pages varies across the University.
You may also publish other information that may be of interest - but all material published MUST conform to the Interim Guidelines for the Use of Personal Web Pages, or - if they exist - locally published Faculty or School policies (e.g. for Humanities see http://www.manchester.ac.uk/humanities/ict/web/webmgt/personalweb/).
Your personal web space is actually on your personal network drive (p: drive) in a folder called public_html. Anything you place in this folder (web pages, documents, graphics etc.) can potentially be accessed by anyone else over the Internet (although you can restrict access if necessary).
Your personal web space is part of your overall p: drive quota therefore anything stored there reduces your quota - take care with large files and graphics. To check your p: drive quota see .
Please note this system does not support CGI/server side programs.
Find someones Personal Web Page
Go to http://personalpages.manchester.ac.uk/ and perform a search for the person you are looking for.
Creating and editing your Personal Web Pages
- You can create pages using any web page or text editor. For courses on web authoring see our Training Courses webpages.
- Save the page on your p: drive in the folder public_html which has already been created for you. Note: if you save the pages as default.htm this will become the default home page for your site.
- If you wish to add more pages and/or folders simply place them inside the public_html folder and make appropriate links between pages - again each page must conform to the guidelines.
Note - as soon pages (or any other files) are placed in your personal web space they are potentially readable by others over the Internet.
Your Personal Web Page Address
You need to know the web address of your personal web folder so that you can tell others how to find your pages. The form of the address is:
- http://personalpages.manchester.ac.uk/staff/frederick.smith, or
- http://personalpages.manchester.ac.uk/student/frederick.smith or
- http://personalpages.manchester.ac.uk/postgrad/frederick.smith
replacing frederick.smith with your own primary email alias. If you aren't sure of the exact for or your email alias (it could alos be of the form fred.smith or f.smith etc. depending on how your account is set up), please contact your Faculty IT Service desk.
- If you have created a page called default.htm in p:/public_html then typing the address in the above form will load that page. You can therefore easily create a website by making links from that page to others in your public_html folder. If you do not create a home page you will need to include the filename in the address e.g. http://personalpages.manchester.ac.uk/postgrad/frederick.smith/architecture.htm
