PC Cluster Locations

The University of Manchester provides a number of computer clusters based around the campus. All the PC clusters run the same operating system and have the same software installed.

University Place (George Kenyon cluster)

This cluster is in one of the new buildings formally known as SCAN.  The cluster is in building 37a (see University map). PC and printing facilities in this cluster are available 24 hours, 7 days a week.

John Rylands University Library

Location: The Main Library on Burlington Street in zones Blue 1, Blue 2 and Blue 3

This is a large cluster giving a total of 240 PCs. There are 7 monochrome laser jet printers serving the main library, three in zone Blue 1 and two on each of zones Blue 2 and Blue 3. There is also one colour laser printer, situated on Blue 1, but it can be used by any of the 240 PCs in the cluster. There is a disk dispenser, change machine and two print robots near the printers on Blue 1.

There is a special area near the lifts on Blue 1 with more workspace and giving wheelchair access.

The cluster is open during normal library hours, but the PCs are turned off 15 minutes before the library closes. Weekend opening varies during the year. The library cluster will have restrictions on the use of web-based email such as Hotmail during the busy periods of the day; see signs in the cluster.

Technical support is available from the IT Service Desk located on the Information Desk on Blue 1.

Owens Park

The cluster consists of 112 Pentiums with printing facilities: two monochrome laser printers, and one colour laser printer. There is also a scanner available in the cluster. The cluster is open to all students of the University (on production of a valid library card) and not just the residents of Owens Park.

The hours of opening are 9am to 8am (23 hours) from Sunday to Thursday and 10am to 9pm on Friday and Saturday. This cluster is open throughout the year although part of it may be reserved for residential courses during the summer vacation.
