Automated Novell Client Installations

Click on the relevant link on the left of the web page that matches the operating system you are running. You will be taken to a web page that explains how to install the software on your operating system with a link to the installation software.

About the Automated Installation Process

These web pages provide an easy way to install the latest Novell Client for Windows 95, 98, 2000 and XP. The installation has been automated and customized to ensure that all machines will be similarly configured. ME is not supported as it was for the home user and NT support has now been removed as Microsoft have removed support.

The Configuration Details link explains what is installed, how the client options are configured and what options you may need to change after the installation is complete.

IMP: THESE AUTOMATED INSTALLATIONS SHOULD NOT BE USED ON CLUSTER MACHINES.

Installation Process

The client software is supplied with a customised installation script and utilities. These are combined in a self extracting archive. Minimal intervention is required from the installation user once the process has been started. The installation process entails a number of steps....

  1. The installer clicks on the web page link to initiate the installation.

  2. The installer confirms when prompted by the web browser that the software should be opened/run, and that it is safe to do so even though it is not signed.

  3. The software is uncompressed to a temporary directory on the PC.

  4. The installation routine starts a DOS or CMD prompt and runs the client install.

  5. The existing client is checked and if out of date the new client is installed.

  6. If the Windows networking files are required (always with Windows 95 and 98) the installer is prompted for the Windows CD.

  7. Once the client has been installed control returns to the DOS/CMD window which displays a final instructional message

  8. The PC needs to be restarted before use.

  9. If the PC needs any specific configuration details, then these must be implemented following the restart. If the defaults are accepted, no configuration is required. However instructions on how to make changes can be found through the Configuration Details pages.
