New Microsoft Releases

This website provides information on the implications of using the latest Microsoft releases at the University:

Microsoft has released a new version of its desktop operating system called Windows 7 as well as a major upgrade to its Office suite, Office 2007.  Deployment and support of these new technologies represents a significant challenge to IT services and the University IT Board has agreed a provisional roadmap to be reviewed before the start of the next academic year.

Students

Students who want to upgrade or who have bought new PC's with the Office 2007 Suite pre-installed should be advised that we strongly recommend that at this time all work should still be provided in Office 2003 format as most staff will not yet have Office 2007. Files can be saved in Office 2007 as Office 2003 format by selecting the 'Save as Type' option.

If you use Office 2003 and are sent an Office 2007 document you will need to use the compatibility pack to convert the document back into an Office 2003 document in order to open it.

Staff

Staff are advised that they should not upgrade the computer they use for work to Windows 7. The IT staff on campus are not in a position to provide you with support for these products.
