Email Scanning
You have been directed here because The University of Manchester mail system has scanned your email. Several checks are made:
- For viruses – we will reject any message containing a known virus.
- For bad MIME attachments – these can also be a sign of junk mail or viruses.
- For unwanted attachments - some attachment types, such as .exe and .vbs are, 99 times out of 100, viruses or other nasties – so we reject them too.
- For junk mail – messages from known spam sites are rejected outright. We also use
greylisting
techniques which decline to accept incoming messages the first time they are seen. Most email systems will try again, and we will then accept these messages once enough time has elapsed. This will usually delay mail from outside the campus by half an hour or more, and blocks a large proportion of junk that would otherwise be permitted.
