About IT Services

The Directorate of IT Services is responsible for the planning, delivery and support of the University’s main computing facilities. This includes the University network and telecommunications systems, web infrastructure, email and calendaring, corporate information systems, online learning systems and research infrastructure. The Directorate is made up of around 380 staff across central and devolved (Faculty) teams.

There are over 630 Wireless Access Points across the University campus. These allow staff and students to connect wirelessly to the internet and the University’s high-speed network. Networking is provided in virtually all the 15,000 study bedrooms in halls of residence.

Each student at the University is provided with a personal email/calendar account which can be accessed from anywhere via the internet or from more than 3,200 PCs for students to use in 72 ‘PC clusters’ across the campus, some of which are open 24/7. From these computers, students can access email, internet, scanning and printing services as well as a huge portfolio of around 500 software applications including specialist titles for specific courses.

The University provides an advanced online learning environment (Blackboard) which provides students with course materials and interactive learning activities, to enhance and support the academic experience. In addition, learning materials can be accessed on any mobile device, allowing you to remain engaged with your coursework without being at a desk and keeping you in touch with staff and fellow students on your course.

Staff and students are provided with full IT support via the IT Service Desk. The Service Desk can be contacted online, over the phone or at face-to-face service desks in the main and Joule libraries. A wide range of IT training is also available either online or face to face.
